Last week a group of Chinese Language students at Shaanxi Teachers University (陕西师范大学)held a food fair to raise funds to help the victims of the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan. Students made food from their home country and sold it out the front their classroom building on a day when many students had spent the night outside due to further aftershock warnings. The currnent death toll in Sichuan is approx 50 000, entire villages will have to rebuild. If you can, please dontate to the Red Cross. (Check out more photos here)

First International Collaboration

I’m really excited to be in the process of my first collaboration, The Lunchbox Project. Currently students from China, Australia and most recently Turkey are participating. The project was initiated by Jess McCulloch in Australia, the idea being that students from different parts of the globe produce a project describing what they have for lunch. Students will produce material in their first language and the language they are learning, this gives the students opportunity to learn about other cultures as well as get a glimpse of the language learning experience of students in other parts of the world. Please click on the link occasionally and check out the students’ progress, or if you have students who are suitable for the project please participate!

Welcome 欢迎

I have been teaching English as a foreign language in China for the past four years,  learning Chinese for the past two. My aim for this blog is to document some of the work happening in both the classroom environments I spend my time in. I am interested in the use of web tools and online learning for language learners and have begun to gradually integrate this into my EFL classes, starting with blogs and online networks such as Ning.  I would like to use this space to share ideas and resources, to talk about language and culture and connect with other language teachers and learners.

Happy learning.
